Hrm. Alan Cross just told me that Kurt Cobain just passed Elvis as 'highest earning dead guy' last year. Grunge is dead, long live grunge? I guess this explains a lot about Courtney.

I realize this is a strange and depressing way to break my lengthy LJ silence... but seriously. My brain has officially given up on the internet:

The fact that Amazon recommended this to me indicates that I need to rethink some of my life choices.

So.... how are you?

[Current Music |Beastie Boys - 3 MCs and 1 DJ (live)]

Now, i've been listening/watching the Beastie Boys since before I can remember (...cause she's on it). And after watching them on Conan O'Brien tonight, I'm ready to crown the Mix Master Mike'd version as their ultimate configuration. He doesn't do wonders for their albums, but the 3 of them live with him is just ridiculous. Hell, he's pretty good by himself, but really, they're an unstoppable unit.

Go buy Awesome... I Fucking Shot That on tuesday. You won't regret it (especially because you won't have to wait through that interminable Nathaniel Hornblower/David Cross stuff like I did in the tehatre). And see if you can spot my sister in the crowd (best... honeymoon... ever).

Oh man, the good weather apparently brings out the city in Ottawa. I got to Bayview station last night, discovered I had 25 minutes to wait for the O-Train, so decided to just walk up Preston to Pub Italia. There were all sorts of characters doing strange things on the sidewalk... yelling up to apartments, randomly getting picked up, arguing about cigarettes, etc. It also turns out there's a comedy club down there now, a banquest/conference centre place built into a new plaza (where a wedding seemed to be happening), a Little Italy mural filling the underside of the 417 overpass, and various other cool looking places. Adobe also apparently moving into the new business/retail park, which I had assumed was yet more condos. Yay intensification!

I came home not all that late (probably around 1), to discover two guys passed out in the hallway to my apartment, sound alseep. I stepped right by their heads, no reaction. It kind of sounded like the party might still be going on inside... so I don't THINK they just forgot their keys, but who knows? Add this to our recent home invasion... and I really need to move out of this place. Ha. And by home invasion I mean a bunch of guys walking into our apartment, dancing with our female friends, and walking out with ~$200 cash, credit cards, and a purse. Said guys proceeded to stab somebody in the lobby, and throw them through the front lobby window. So glad I was too drunk and tired and emotional to be partying by this point, and had barricaded myself in my room with my phone and old CDs. Still a little unnerving. Lock those doors, people! Especially if you're cranking the reggae vibes!

There were more fun sketchy dudes hanging out on Elgin today. Eventually this somewhat out of it guy in the ATM started asking me questions about the envelopes... I thought he was going to ask about the new 'no licking' folding ones that TD Canada Trust got, but he was more confused about how to get the envelope door to open. They seem to have added more steps, so I walked him through it. He did helpfully point out that someone had set the ATM lobby on fire a week ago, which is why it was under construction again like a month after they replaced the machines. I guess someone didn't like the new multilingual service!

And I'm off to parents dinner, but not my parents, without the daughter. We'll see how this goes.

so my ceiling leaked onto my computer table today, we had to call in a domestic disturbance last night while marking assignments at 11 pm, and i just sent my lady off to new york for the week... but life is feeling better than it has in a few weeks. The calculations (not simulations!) are humming along at school, everything but the theses are done, I'm finally getting new glasses tomorrow, emotional turbulence have been weathered, etc., etc. time to putter around the room, clean up papers, write e-mails, figure out life, watch hockey, etc. Oh, and my camera battery charger finally arrived, so I can start documenting said life For Your Viewing Pleasure. More on that in a bit, once I get F-Spot to do my bidding.

Does anyone want to come with me to The Constantines on saturday?? I have tickets, my friend just bailed.

As for the lack of updates recently, I've:
- Been 'busy' 'working' on the thesis
- Been actually busy with school
- Decided I'm probably going to do my PhD at Trinity College, Dublin. So awesome.
- Gotten involved in possibly starting a business this summer, hopefully getting lots of cashish
- Found out I'm going to London for a few days in April with....
- ...the woman I've fallen completely, horridly in love with. I will eventually write the most emo entry ever about our whirlwind romance. It's disgusting. And awesome. Disgustingly awesome.

If you come to the show with me I promise to talk/not talk your ear off about it, depending on your mood.

Nazi Punks Fuck Off. Seriously.

The BNP man, dressed smartly in a pressed white shirt and suit trousers, is about to lay down his first track. He admits that he doesn't have a strong singing voice. 'With our swords and our cutlasses, we'll fight until we die!' he essays to an old military tune, before forgetting the lyrics and shouting 'Bollocks!' Later he talks about the type of music Great White Records will be releasing: 'I personally quite like reggae but I draw the line at reggae [being released on the label], obviously. We're not having any bhangra. Unless we turn it into a heavily Anglo-Saxon version, we're not having any rap either.'

[Current Music |Ben Harper - Steal My Kisses]

You know it's bad when we're matching up Khavanov and Berg with the leagues highest scoring line.

Oh man. So I went to the Leafs-Sens game tonight, courtesy my sister and brother-in-law. I knew the Leafs were in bad trouble, but I seriously would have been happy losing 8-4. What we got...was...well...wow.

Before the game I joked with Alyson about when the first Sens goal would be. 45 seconds? Minute and a half? I was closer the first time - 41 seconds. Fuck. A traditional Leafs pass right in front of their own net, right to an opposing player.

Belfour then proceeded to stand on his head for 15 minutes or so, before Chara checked one of his own players into him. Shook him up a bit, and the Leafs just disintegrated as a whole after that. No retribution for the attack on Belfour, either, despite having all the 'enforcers' in the line up. Although the grind line were the only people worth cheering for. That and whatever Sen checked the shit out of a linesman, and didn't get a penalty.

Alfredsson scored short-handed. Hasek totally owned Sundin on the only good Leafs play all game...came out like 30 feet with the huge poke check.

Report on the defenceman:

Kaberle - can still carry the puck up like crazy, but refuses to shoot. typical. only one bad mistake that i saw, though.
Klee - cannot keep the puck in the zone to safe his life. also needs to get his skates sharpened or something.
Colaiacovo - still a bit jittery, a bad play or two, but is doing his best to bring back the hip check. i still like him. can actually skate.
Kronwall - young, jittery, but mostly stayed out of the way. likes the big lofty dump-in. at least he got the puck in the zone.
Berg - where do I start? he blocked one pass on a two on one, which is the only good thing i've ever seen him do. just bloody awful.
Khavanov - see Berg. they were getting a truly stupid amount of minutes. and i'm sure they were like -4.

O'Neill still doesn't nothing except miss his one good chance a game, although he started running people. Steen couldn't score with time right in front of Hasek, but it's Hasek. Stajan was making a point of finishing checks, he'll be fine. Wellwood eventually had to go into his "I'm just going to try to do everything myself" mode, and got rocked for his trouble.

Just shameful. Ah well, at least I get a free slice of pizza since the Sens scored more than 6 goals. Ha.

Oh, and it was the Sens 1000th game, 500th home game, and the official launch of the new name. They've gone with this whole "Go Red" theme, which was pretty lame yet psychologically effective.

Maybe we can score at least one goal on monday.

Hrm, so Koss has mailed me a brand new pair of full size headphones (sorry - 'stereophones'. whatever, Koss), rather than try to repair my old ones. Oddly enough they still haven't cashed my cheque for S&H. Hrm. What's funny is that they're in the retail packaging, complete with bonus earbuds. If anyone is in dire need of incredibly, incredibly bad earbuds, let me know.

My Sennheisers arrived over break as well. They're as good as advertised. Not significantly better than the creative labs default ones, but they're usually reviewed as pretty good. The volume control on the wire is nice, although the wire is more of a standard length. The CL ones were nicely long, you could wrap them down out of the bottom of your jacket and back up. This was occasionally useful, for reasons I can't quite remember.

This brings up the question of what album I should listen to in order to break in the full sizers. My CD buying has tapered off quite a bit, and I realized I don't really have a 'favourite' band or album or anything any more. It sounds like Tool is gearing up for spring release, but I was disappointed by pretty much every follow-up this year. Which may or may not be every single band's fault.

Also, while picking up my package I got a Hires root beer. Not only was it twenty cents cheaper than A&W, but....what the fuck? Hires? I had completely forgotten that was a root beer brand. I sort of remember A&W 'coming back' into stores, but can't picture whether it displaced Hires or Mugs or both or what. I can't believe they get away with such a blatant rip off of the A&W colour scheme, either. Maybe they're the same company. And now I want to pronounce it hi-res, not high-ers. Stupid computers.

And the freaking curtains are finally pretty much up. The hooks need some fixing, they could use a fair bit of ironing, and the longer ones aren't quite wide enough. It's a great testament to half-assery. Although the temperature seems to already have risen above normal levels.
